A new quality improvement initiative is aiming to reduce unplanned readmissions for children who undergo adenotonsillectomy in Victoria.

Safer Care Victoria’s Paediatric Clinical Network is looking for health services across the state to join the collaborative.

Why adenotonsillectomy?

Adenotonsillectomy is the most common surgical procedure for children, with more than 12,000 procedures in Victoria per year.

Nationally, rates of unplanned readmission after tonsillectomy are higher than any other type of surgery for adults or children. Our data also shows around 10 per cent of hospitals have a readmission rate outside expected levels.

This collaborative will explore the reasons why patients return to hospital following this procedure, with the goal of reducing readmissions.
