VAHI and Safer Care Victoria (SCV) are collaborating to deliver an education program that builds board members’ confidence in carrying out their clinical governance responsibilities.

So far, we have held sessions in Melbourne, Kyabram, Leongatha and Warrnambool. At each session,  SCV have begun by outlining board members’ roles and responsibilities in clinical governance and then demonstrating how to apply the SCV clinical governance framework.

VAHI’s contribution to the sessions has focused on increasing understanding of healthcare quality and safety data. This includes providing boards with education on relevant health data and analytics concepts, such as raw versus adjusted results. We are also teaching participants to understand and interpret common healthcare quality performance data and associated visualisations, including funnel plots and timeseries charts.

The sessions have provided a great opportunity for us to show board members the newly redeveloped Board safety and quality report.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with one participant telling us that, ‘The VAHI teaching on the night was fantastic and worth extending.’ We will be holding further sessions in early 2020.

We are also looking at other opportunities to better support board members to interpret the data and visual concepts displayed in our reports – stay tuned for more details next year.
