Maternity and newborn

This consultation is now closed.

We have developed contemporary, evidence-based guidance and practical advice for Victorian maternity and neonatal care providers covering three important topics: homebirth, water use for labour and birth, and safe infant sleeping.

Victorian healthcare professionals play an important role in providing parents/caregivers with clear and consistent information, and these guidelines will support you in delivering appropriate verbal and written information to parents, extended family and other caregivers.

Developed closely with experts, these guidelines will help you:

  • develop a safe homebirth program to provide options to women
  • provide advice to women on the safe use of water for labour and birth
  • guide safe infant sleeping education and behaviours for parents/caregivers and in maternity and neonatal settings
  • support women (and the people who care for them) to be involved in their care.

Download the draft guidelines open for consultation below, with feedback to be provided via individual surveys.
