On 25 June 2026, 70 representatives from the 5 health services participating in the Safety culture in birth suite pilot came together for their first in-person learning session.

The event brought together consumers, midwives, obstetricians, directors and executive sponsors to:

  • share learnings from the pilot to date
  • explore evidencebased approaches to safety culture
  • identify practical improvement strategies for maternity services.

Highlights from the day included:

  • a consumer panel, with two consumers generously sharing what it means to feel safe during maternity care.
  • interactive group activities that explored ways to embed safety culture principles into everyday birth suite practice.
  • a presentation from Associate Professor Ryan Hodges, who shared learnings from the Operative Vaginal Birth Bundle

The learning session marked an important milestone for the pilot, reinforcing the value of collaboration, shared learning and continuous improvement in creating safer maternity and newborn care.
