The latest results are in, and the Discharge Optimisation for Planned Surgery (DOPS) initiative continues to deliver strong gains even across the quieter months of the year, with further bed day savings recorded across Victoria.

In the past quarter, the program saved 815 bed days. Since its launch in late 2024, this has increased to a total of 5,247.5 bed days saved. This is equivalent to freeing up capacity for an additional 1,749 total hip or knee replacement procedures.

The team is looking forward to connecting with participating health services at our Action Learning Lab where we’ll explore the ongoing impact of DOPS on:

  • healthcare standards
  • bed availability
  • healthcare costs
  • hospital-acquired complications
  • access to planned surgery.

These discussions will focus on sustaining and growing positive outcomes for patients and the broader health system.

If your health service is interested in joining the initiative, we encourage you to get in touch with the value based health care team at valuebasedhealthcare@safercare.vic.gov.au.
