The 100,000 Lives program is a 5-year initiative dedicated to transforming healthcare and improving outcomes for 100,000 Victorians. Our 2023–24 report showcases the program’s key achievements, highlighting our invaluable collaborations with health services, consumers, and experts that have driven meaningful change in healthcare quality and safety.

This year we have improved 18,456 lives across Victoria by:

  • reducing inappropriate prescribing for low-risk penicillin allergies
  • improving maternity care related to postpartum haemorrhage management, preterm and early-term birth prevention
  • providing better cardiovascular care and access to treatment for rural and remote areas
  • launching new digital referral forms linking hospital pharmacies and community asthma programs
  • piloting a patient activation measurement tool to enable more tailored care
  • improving patient-centred care for older people and reducing falls; and
  • reducing hospital length-of-stay by testing a criteria-led discharge toolkit.

To build health sector improvement capability, we have also:

  • trained 40 clinicians in a 90-day innovation cycle through the Health Innovators Program
  • created a free online learning package on Foundations of Medical Technology Innovation
  • trained 300 health service participants in quality improvement; and
  • created digital ‘train the trainer’ resources.
