Description

Join this Clinical Conversation featuring two complementary improvement projects run by Barwon Health, each offering practical insights into how teams are working to reduce avoidable harm and improve patient experience in different ways.

The session is designed to be flexible, you’re welcome to attend the full hour or join the half most relevant to you.

2:00–2:30pm

Better Together: Mind & Continence

Presented by:

  • Dr Fiona Lynch, Clinical Lead Allied Health Psychologists and Psychology Educator for a Deakin University project
  • Cheryl Parkin, Clinic Coordinator/Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, Continence Service

This first session shares learnings from an innovative project exploring how psychological support can be integrated into a continence service. The team will reflect on what they learned while embedding a student‑led psychology model into a traditionally medical setting, and how addressing mental health needs can support engagement, behaviour change, and quality of life for patients. The presentation will also touch on real‑world challenges, including stigma, referral pathways, and how teams think about measuring impact beyond traditional clinical metrics.

2:30–3:00pm

A systems‑Based Approach to Patient Safety: Reducing Hospital‑Acquired Pressure Injuries using AcciMap Methodology

Presented by:

  • Ms Katherine Frick. Deputy Director Patient Safety, Barwon Health
  • Ms Trish Mant.  Manager Practice Development Unit, Barwon Health

The second session focuses on system‑level learning from pressure injury prevention. Following an increase in serious hospital‑acquired pressure injuries, the team undertook a thematic review using AcciMap methodology to better understand the contributing factors across services. This presentation will share key insights from the analysis, highlight system gaps, and discuss how the findings are being used to strengthen risk management, monitoring, and prevention efforts across different care settings.
