Description

Preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The National Preterm Birth Prevention Collaborative (Every Week Counts II) aims to reduce preterm and early term birth rates by 20% by June 2026.

This session focuses on bridging the gap between primary health care and maternity services, ensuring key interventions are not missed in early pregnancy.

Who should attend

This session is aimed at primary healthcare providers, including:

  • general practitioners (GP)
  • practice nurses and midwives.

Learning aims

In this session we will:

  • raise awareness of early preterm birth risk factors and evidence-based prevention strategies
  • emphasise timely intervention and primary care’s role
  • share key RANZCOG guidelines and preeclampsia updates
  • strengthen referral pathways between primary care and maternity services
  • foster collaboration and engagement with GPs and primary health providers.

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • identify women at increased risk of preterm birth and initiate early interventions (e.g., progesterone, cervical length measurement)
  • understand current RANZCOG guidelines for preterm preeclampsia screening and commencement of low dose aspirin.
  • strengthen communication between primary care and maternity services.
