    About the model

Safewards is a model of care that encourages nurses and clinical staff to:

    • reduce conflict and containment within mental health services
    • identify and address the causes of behaviours in staff and patients that may result in harm
    • support a culture of safety, respect and inclusion.

We are supporting Victorian mental health services to implement the Safewards Model.

    Implementing Safewards in Victoria

The Safewards Model was initially trialled at 7 mental health services in Victoria between 2014 and 2016. By 2019 it was implemented at 18 public mental health services. For a detailed evaluation of Safewards in Victoria see the Outcomes of the Victorian Safewards trial article.

With the success of Safewards in different healthcare settings across Victoria, we encourage all health service types to see how Safewards is applicable to them and the consumers they serve.

The Safewards model is acknowledged in the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System (2020) as an important program to support the reduction of seclusion and restraint in mental health services.

    Community of practice

The Safewards Community of Practice provides a supportive environment to:

    • discuss ideas and challenges related to implementing Safewards
    • share knowledge and resources between services across Victoria.

If you are interested in participating in the Community of Practice, please email the Safewards Coordinator CMHN@safercare.vic.gov.au.
