Birth education classes (or ‘antenatal classes’) can help you learn what to expect during labour, birth and the first few weeks at home with your baby. This might help you feel more prepared and confident for birth and early parenting.
Classes cover a range of topics including:
- pregnancy health and wellbeing
- the signs of labour
- when to call the hospital or your homebirth midwife
- interventions commonly considered during labour
- pain relief during labour
- breastfeeding
- newborn care and safe sleeping and settling.
Classes vary in what they cover, how they are delivered and how much they cost. You may choose one type of class or a mix.
