Registry data and quality improvement

Clinical Quality Registries (CQRs) systematically monitor the quality, safety and effectiveness of healthcare within specific clinical areas.

They collect, analyse and report health-related information to support quality improvement and translational research by:

• identifying variation in clinical practice and patient outcomes
• measuring performance against established benchmarks and standards
• providing feedback to clinicians and health services to support continuous improvement
• generating evidence to inform research, policy and service planning.

By providing feedback to clinicians and health services, CQRs support ongoing improvements in healthcare quality, safety and patient outcomes.

How Clinical Quality Registries improve quality and safety

CQRs play a vital role in improving healthcare quality, safety and patient outcomes across Victoria by:

• measuring outcomes and monitoring variation in care
• supporting local, state and national improvement initiatives
• linking clinical and administrative data to enhance understanding of patient outcomes and system performance
• strengthening clinical governance through risk identification and performance monitoring
• informing evidence-based policy, planning and resource allocation
• promoting transparency and accountability through reporting
• supporting research and innovation to improve treatments and models of care.

National standards and guidance

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care provides national guidance to support the governance, operation and continuous improvement of CQRs.
